Virōdhi — That Which Obstructs the Soul's Proper Life
Virōdhi means an opponent or obstacle. In Śrī Vaiṣṇava usage it may denote anything contrary to the soul's true dependence on Bhagavān, its reliance on the proper upāya, its goal of Bhagavad-Bhāgavata kainkaryam, or the conduct taught by the Āchāryas. Terms such as svarūpa-virōdhi, upāya-virōdhi, and prāpya-virōdhi classify obstacles according to what they oppose.

The title must be handled carefully because two different works circulate under closely related names:
- Vedānta Deśika's Virodha Parihāra is a Maṇipravāḷa work structured as 108 questions and answers that removes doubts and contradictions relevant to a mumukṣu. It is not a list of thirty-two pāsuram-based obstacles.
- Virōdhi Parihāraṅgaḷ in the Rāmānuja–Vaṅgipurattu Nambi transmission records practical instructions given by Rāmānuja and documented by Vaṅgipurattu Nambi. This text is especially prominent in the Teṉkalai/KOYIL teaching context.
Neither work should be confused with the other, and the generic word virōdhi is broader than either book. In daily reflection, a devotee uses the category to identify whatever distorts śeṣatva, Āchārya-sambandha, Bhagavad-Bhāgavata respect, or kainkaryam and then applies the corresponding pūrvācārya teaching.
