The Magnum Opus
Śrīvacana Bhūṣaṇam (Sanskrit: श्रीवचनभूषणम् — 'ornament of Śrī's words' or 'ornament of the holy words') is widely considered Piḷḷai Lokācārya's greatest and most comprehensive work — a systematic guide to the ideal prapanna's inner life and conduct. Written in 475 sūtrams, it covers nearly every aspect of Teṉkalai Śrī Vaiṣṇava theology and praxis.
Content and Scope
The Śrīvacana Bhūṣaṇam addresses:
- The foundational doctrines (tattvas, prapatti, upāya/upeya)
- The prapanna's relationship with the ācāryan (considered the supreme practical teaching)
- The meaning and practice of āchārya-niṣṭhā — sole dependence on the ācāryan
- The conduct appropriate to a prapanna in daily life
- The prapanna's relationship with other Vaiṣṇavas (Bhāgavata-niṣṭhā)
- The inner states of the prapanna: freedom from anxiety, gratitude, humility
The Doctrine of Āchārya-niṣṭhā
The distinctive teaching of Śrīvacana Bhūṣaṇam that most characterizes Teṉkalai theology is the emphasis on āchārya-niṣṭhā: the prapanna's liberation is ultimately through the ācāryan's grace, not the soul's own act. Piḷḷai Lokācārya systematically shows that the highest form of prapatti is the soul's total dependence on the ācāryan rather than any self-directed surrender.
Maṇavāḷa Māmunigaḷ's Commentary
As with all of Piḷḷai Lokācārya's works, Maṇavāḷa Māmunigaḷ's extensive vyākhyānam (commentary) is essential to understanding the text. The commentary draws on Āzhvār hymns, Sanskrit śāstras, and ācāryan statements to illuminate each dense sūtram.
