Obstacles on the Path
Upāya-virōdhi ('obstacles to the upāya/means') refers to the factors that impede, dilute, or obstruct the spiritual means (upāya) — particularly prapatti. In the context of Piḷḷai Lokācārya's Srivachana Bhushanam and related texts, virōdhis (obstacles) are identified systematically as a guide for the prapanna to recognize and remove impediments to full, effective surrender.
Categories of Obstacles
Obstacles to the means include: (1) svātantryam — believing in one's own independence from the Lord; thinking one can achieve liberation through personal effort alone; (2) kartṛtva-abhimāna — identifying oneself as the doer of actions rather than recognizing the Lord as the true agent; (3) anyathā-śaraṇa — taking refuge in means other than the Lord (other deities, rituals as ends in themselves, personal virtues); (4) avisvasam — lack of genuine faith in the Lord's willingness and ability to protect; (5) doṣa-smaraṇa — focusing on one's own faults to the point of doubting the Lord's grace.
The Virōdhi Literature
Vedānta Deśika systematized the obstacles in his work Prapanna-Pārijāta and related texts. Piḷḷai Lokāchārya's Virōdhi Parihāraṅgaḷ systematizes 93 obstacle-resolution pairs — each virōdhi paired with the principle or Lord's grace that removes it. Each virōdhi is paired with the Āzhvār teaching or Lord's action that removes it.
Resolution Through Prapatti
The good news: prapatti itself, when genuinely performed with sāttvika-tyāga and under the ācārya's guidance, progressively removes these obstacles. The obstacles are not permanent features of the jīva but accretions of karma and false understanding that prapatti and subsequent kaiṅkarya-life dissolve.
