He Who Ended the Distress of the Elephant (Gajendra)

களிறு துயர் தீர்த்தவன்

126 பதகமுதலைவாய்ப் பட்டகளிறு *
கதறிக்கைகூப்பி என்கண்ணா! கண்ணா! என்ன
உதவப்புள்ளூர்ந்து அங்குஉறுதுயர்தீர்த்த *
அதகன்வந்துஅப்பூச்சிகாட்டுகின்றான் அம்மனே! அப்பூச்சிகாட்டுகின்றான்.

Simple Translation

126. Caught by a terrible crocodile, when Gajendra the elephant cried out in distress, “O my Kannā, my Kannā!”, the majestic lord came on Garudā and saved him. He, the protector of his devotees, comes as a goblin and frightens us, That dear one comes as a goblin and frightens us.

பதக — தாக்கும் தன்மையுடைய; முதலைவாய் — முதலை வாயில்; பட்ட களிறு — அகப்பட்டுகொண்ட கஜேந்திரன்; கதறிக் கைகூப்பி — கதறிக்கொண்டே கை கூப்பி; என் கண்ணா! — என் கண்ணனே!; கண்ணா! — ஆதிமூலமே!; என்ன — என்றழைக்க; உதவ — அதற்கு உதவுவதற்காக; புள் ஊர்ந்து — கருடன் மீது சென்று; அங்கு — யானையின்; உறு துயர் — கடும் துயரத்தைத்; தீர்த்த — தீர்த்த; அதகன் வந்து — கம்பீரமானவன் ஓடி வந்து; அப்பூச்சி காட்டுகின்றான் — பூச்சி காட்டி விளயாடுகிறான்; அம்மனே! — அம்மாடி! எனக்கு பயமா இருக்கே என்று சொல்ல; அப்பூச்சி காட்டுகின்றான் — பூச்சி காட்டி விளயாடுகிறான்

paṭṭa kal̤iṟu — When Gajendra (the elephant) was caught by; mutalaivāy — the mouth of a crocodile that was; pataka — was ferocious; kataṟik kaikūppi — it cried out with reverence (anjali hasta); ĕṉṉa — and said; kaṇṇā! — Kanna; ĕṉ kaṇṇā! — my Kanna; pul̤ ūrntu — You went on your Garudā; utava — to help the elephant; tīrtta — and eliminated; uṟu tuyar — the suffering; aṅku — of that elephant; atakaṉ vantu — the mighty one, please come; appūcci kāṭṭukiṉṟāṉ — He comes as a goblin and frightens us; ammaṉe! — oh my god! to say that I am scared; appūcci kāṭṭukiṉṟāṉ — He comes as a goblin and frightens us
