The Obstacle-Removal Text
Virōdhi Parihāram ('Removal of Obstacles') is a key practical text by Vedānta Deśika (13th–14th century CE), organized around the identification and removal of specific spiritual obstacles (virōdhis). It is one of the most practically-oriented texts in the Vaḍakalai tradition, concerned not with abstract philosophy but with the day-to-day conduct of the devotional life.
Structure
The text proceeds systematically through various categories of virōdhi — obstacles related to: the self's false identification, the relationship with the Lord, the relationship with devotees, ritual conduct, food and purity, social engagement, and the overall orientation of the spiritual life. For each obstacle, the text identifies the error and prescribes the corrective understanding or action.
Practical Guidance
Example teachings from the virōdhi-parihāram tradition: the virōdhi of 'treating the archa as a mere stone' (not recognizing the Lord's full presence in the temple deity) is overcome by deep understanding of archa-avatāra theology; the virōdhi of 'associating with those who disrespect the Lord or tradition' is overcome by cultivating bhāgavata-sambandha instead.
Relationship to Srivachana Bhushanam
While the Virōdhi Parihāram is specifically a Vaḍakalai (Deśika's school) text, its concerns overlap with Piḷḷai Lokācārya's Srivachana Bhushanam, which also addresses the practical conduct of the prapanna in great detail. Together, these texts constitute the 'applied ethics' of Sri Vaishnava theology.
