The Limb of Faith
Rakṣiṣyatīti viśvāsa (Sanskrit: रक्षिष्यतीति विश्वास — 'the faith that He will protect') is the third constituent of śaraṇāgati — the unshakeable conviction that the Lord will indeed save the surrendering soul.
The Content of This Faith
The rakṣiṣyatīti (the 'He will protect') component has a specific content in Śrī Vaiṣṇava teaching:
- The Lord is omnipotent — fully capable of protecting from all harm
- The Lord has promised protection through the carama-śloka ('I will free you from all sins')
- The Lord's nature is vātsalya (parental love) — He cannot abandon His own
- Pirāṭṭi is present as purushakāra — ensuring the soul's appeal reaches the Lord
This faith is not mere hope but viśvāsa — a settled, unshakeable conviction arising from understanding these facts.
Not Anxiety-Dependent Faith
Piḷḷai Lokācārya emphasizes: the prapanna's viśvāsa is not contingent on feeling the Lord's protection at every moment. Even when circumstances appear difficult, the prapanna's faith does not waver — because it is grounded not in experience but in the Lord's promise (abhaya-dāna). This is why prapatti produces nirbhaya (fearlessness): the certainty of protection regardless of outward circumstances.
The Relationship to Carama Śloka
The carama-śloka's 'mā śucaḥ' ('do not grieve') is understood as the Lord granting rakṣiṣyatīti viśvāsa itself — He commands the soul not to worry, which is the same as granting the inner certainty of protection.
