The Surrender of Vibhīṣaṇa
Vibhīṣaṇa was a righteous soul born into Rāvaṇa's household in Laṅkā. Though a demon (rākṣasa) by birth, he was a devotee of Viṣṇu by heart. When Rāvaṇa abducted Sītā, Vibhīṣaṇa repeatedly counseled him to return her and make peace with Rāma. Ignored and humiliated, Vibhīṣaṇa left Laṅkā and flew across the ocean to surrender himself at Rāma's feet.
The Charama-Śloka Occasion
Vibhīṣaṇa's surrender (śaraṇāgati) to Rāma is the occasion for Rāma's famous declaration — the charama-śloka (sakṛd eva prapanno): "Whoever surrenders to me even once, I grant them fearlessness forever." This single statement became the scriptural foundation of the Sri Vaishnava prapatti doctrine.
When Sugrīva and the monkey leaders were suspicious of Vibhīṣaṇa (fearing a spy), Rāma overruled them — saying that even if Vibhīṣaṇa were an enemy sent by Rāvaṇa, Rāma could not turn away one who had come in surrender. This unconditional acceptance (rakṣaṇa) is the heart of the prapatti teaching.
Why Vibhīṣaṇa Is the Ideal Prapanna
- He surrendered with nothing — no guarantee of reward, no bargain
- He had no other refuge (ananya-gati) — he burned his bridges with Laṅkā
- He surrendered as he was — a rākṣasa, an outsider, distrusted by all
- He trusted completely in the Lord's compassion (kṛpā)
In the Sri Vaishnava tradition, the charama-śloka discourse to Vibhīṣaṇa is studied as the foundational statement on śaraṇāgati.
