Vaiṣṇava — One Who Belongs to Bhagavān Viṣṇu
A Vaiṣṇava (Sanskrit: 'pertaining to Viṣṇu', one who is of Viṣṇu) is a devotee of Bhagavān Viṣṇu/Nārāyaṇa. The term encompasses a wide spectrum — from the broadest sense of anyone who worships Viṣṇu, to the specifically initiated Śrī Vaiṣṇava who has received pañca-saṃskāra (the five purificatory rites) from an Āchārya and committed to the Śrī Vaiṣṇava path of prapatti (total surrender). In the Śrī Vaiṣṇava tradition, the Vaiṣṇava identity is not merely one of belief but of transformed selfhood: one who has realized, through tattva-jñānam (correct theological knowledge), that the ātman's essential nature is to be a servant (śeṣa) of Bhagavān.
The Āzhvārs describe the Vaiṣṇava community as the truest form of family and company. Nammāzhvār's Tiruvāymozhi celebrates bhāgavata-anubhavam — the joy of being in the company of Bhagavān's devotees — as equal to or greater than direct union with Bhagavān. The verse 'tirukkuṛaḷ' of Śrī Vaiṣṇava theology is: 'maṇavāḷa māmunigaḷ' used to say that Bhāgavata sambandham (the relationship with Vaiṣṇavas) is even more protective than Bhagavān's relationship itself — because Bhāgavatas mediate Bhagavān's grace downward. This is the doctrine of bhāgavata-apacāra (offence against Vaiṣṇavas) being graver than Bhagavad-apacāra (offence against Bhagavān).
In Śrī Vaiṣṇava practice, a Vaiṣṇava is recognizable by the Ūrdhvapuṇḍra (vertical forehead-mark of Viṣṇu in white with a central red or saffron line), the tulasī mālā (beads worn around the neck), the śaṅkha-cakra-tāpa markings on the arms (received at pañca-saṃskāra), and by saying 'Adiyēn' ('I, the servant') as the first-person pronoun. The Vaiṣṇava community (bhāgavata-gaṇa) is revered collectively as Bhagavān's own body on earth — the living congregation of surrendered souls.
