Ūrdhvapuṇḍra — The Sacred Vertical Mark of the Vaiṣṇava
The ūrdhvapuṇḍra (ūrdhva = upward, puṇḍra = sacred mark/line) is the vertical white clay mark — tirumāṇ in Tamil — that Vaiṣṇavas apply daily at twelve sacred locations of the body in total, including the forehead. The mark consists of two upward-pointing white lines (applied with white clay called tirumaṇ) with the central vertical Śrī-cūrṇam, whose customary colour/material varies by lineage between them — the white lines representing the feet of Bhagavān Viṣṇu, the red representing Mahālakṣmī (Śrī) residing between His feet. The upward direction (ūrdhva) is significant: it points toward Vaikuṇṭha, the supreme goal.
In dvādaśa-puṇḍra application there are twelve marks in total, each accompanied by one of the twelve names of Bhagavān. The exact anatomical wording and application procedure should follow the disciple's transmitted Āchārya/kalpa tradition rather than the inaccurate fixed list formerly given here. Each application is accompanied by the name of a divine form or weapon (āyudha) of Bhagavān — the dvādaśa-nāma (twelve names): Keśava, Nārāyaṇa, Mādhava, Govinda, Viṣṇu, Madhusūdana, Trivikrama, Vāmana, Śrīdhara, Hṛṣīkeśa, Padmanābha, Dāmodara. The body thus becomes a temple, each part consecrated to one of Bhagavān's names.
The ūrdhvapuṇḍra is both an external identifying mark of the Śrī Vaiṣṇava and a daily act of nityānusandhānam (continuous remembrance of Bhagavān). Āgamic texts specify that wearing the ūrdhvapuṇḍra sanctifies the body and all actions performed with it. The Viṣṇu Purāṇa states that a Vaiṣṇava who wears the ūrdhvapuṇḍra on the forehead is spiritually protected. In Śrī Vaiṣṇava Āchārya literature, not wearing the ūrdhvapuṇḍra (or wearing the Śaiva bhasma-tripuṇḍra instead) is considered a breach of Vaiṣṇava dharma.
