Upādānam — Gathering Materials for Worship
Upādānam (Sanskrit: upā = toward + ādāna = taking/gathering; 'gathering toward') is the second of the pañca kāla — the act of collecting all the necessary materials for the Lord's formal worship (thiruvārādhanam).
What Is Gathered: Fresh flowers (puṣpam), Tulasī leaves, pure water, fragrant powder (sāttuppadi), incense (dhūpam), lamps (dīpam), fruits and food for the offering (bhōgam), sacred vessels (pañca pātram), and any other items needed for the worship.
The Devotional Attitude: Every act of gathering is itself an act of worship. Picking flowers for the Lord, washing Tulasī, preparing food for the offering — these are not mere chores. 'I gather with reverence what is most precious, to offer it to the most precious.' The Āḷvārs describe the incomparable joy of gathering garlands for the Lord's divine form.
Context in Pañca Kāla: Upādānam follows abhigamanam (approaching the Lord) and precedes ijjā (formal worship). The gathered materials are what make the formal worship possible — without upādānam, ijjā cannot be complete.
