tiruvaradhanam

திருவாராதனம்

Also known as: tiruvaradhanam, tiruvaradanam, thiruvaradhanam, home worship, aradhana, domestic worship

Meaning

Daily worship of the Lord's sacred image (archa-murti or thiruvaradhana perumal) in one's home — the central devotional practice of every Sri Vaishnava household. It involves bathing, adorning, feeding, and reverencing the Lord.

Detailed Explanation

The Daily Home Worship

Tiruvarādhanam (Tamil: திருவாராதனம் — 'sacred worship' from tiru (sacred) + ārādhanam (worship, propitiation)) is the prescribed daily home ritual for initiated Śrī Vaiṣṇavas. Unlike purely external temple visits, tiruvarādhanam establishes the Lord as the householder of the house — He is the true master of the home, and the devotee is His servant.

The Form of Worship

A full tiruvarādhanam typically involves:

  • Āvāhana — invoking the Lord's presence in the image
  • Snāna — ritual bath of the mūrti (image) with pañcāmṛtam (five sacred liquids)
  • Vastra — adorning with fresh clothes
  • Puṣpa — offering flowers
  • Dhūpa-dīpa — incense and lamp offering
  • Naivedyam — offering cooked food
  • Praṇāma and Sattumuṛai — prostrations and recitation of verses from the Divya Prabandham

The Thiruvarādhanam Perumal

Every Śrī Vaiṣṇava home has a special image of the Lord (thiruvarādhanam Perumāḷ) that is the household's own deity, passed through generations. This is distinct from the temple mūrti. Caring for this deity — daily — is considered one of the foremost kainkaryams a devotee can perform.

Significance

Piḷḷai Lokācārya in his rahasya-granthams explains that tiruvarādhanam is not merely ritual propriety but a living relationship: the devotee bathes, feeds, and serves the Lord as one would the Lord Himself — because the archa mūrti is the Lord in His most accessible form (archa-avatāra).
