Abhigamanam — Approaching the Lord
Abhigamanam (Sanskrit: abhi = toward + gamana = going; 'going toward') is the first of the pañca kāla (five-fold daily duties) in Vaidika Śrī Vaiṣṇava practice — the act of preparing and approaching Bhagavān at the beginning of the day.
Practical Content: Abhigamanam includes: waking at brahma muhūrtam (pre-dawn), performing ablutions, bathing, applying the sacred marks (ūrdhva puṇḍra), reciting the preliminary prayers and guruparamparā invocations, and proceeding to the temple or home shrine for the day's worship.
The Inner Meaning: Abhigamanam is not merely physical movement — it is the soul's turning toward its true Master. 'I am going to the Lord; I am the servant; He awaits me.' This orientation, renewed daily, keeps the Śrī Vaiṣṇava's identity as a servant of Bhagavān vivid and active.
Five Kālas: Abhigamanam → Upādānam → Ijjā → Svādhyāyam → Yogam. Each builds on the previous: approaching leads to gathering materials, which leads to formal worship, which leads to studying His word, which leads to deep communion (yogam) with Bhagavān.
