Also known as: piratti, sri, mahalakshmi, thayar, perundevi, pirattiyar

Meaning

Sri (Mahalakshmi) — the divine consort of Sriman Narayana, inseparably united with Him. She is the compassionate mother of all souls, the intercessor (purushakara) who recommends surrendering souls to the Lord, and the embodiment of grace.

Detailed Explanation

Who Is Pirāṭṭi?

Pirāṭṭi (Tamil: பிராட்டி — 'the lady, the queen') is the Tamil Śrī Vaiṣṇava name for Śrī Mahālakṣmī — the divine consort of Śrīman Nārāyaṇa. She is not merely His wife in a human sense but His eternal śakti (divine power), inseparably part of His being. Where Nārāyaṇa is, Pirāṭṭi is — always, eternally.

Her Three Roles

In Śrī Vaiṣṇava theology, Pirāṭṭi has three essential roles:

  1. Purushakāra — the intercessor who presents surrendering souls to the Lord and recommends His grace on their behalf. Her compassion softens the Lord's justice-tendency.
  2. Co-Giver of MokshaNārāyaṇa grants liberation, but Pirāṭṭi's recommendation is considered causally necessary. The compound 'Śrīmate Nārāyaṇāya' in Dvayam invokes both.
  3. Inseparable Consort — She dwells in the Lord's chest (on the lotus) eternally; she is present in every avatāra (Sītā with Rāma, Rukmiṇī with Kṛṣṇa, etc.); she is the first teacher of the rahasyas after the Lord.

Pirāṭṭi's Own Greatness

Pirāṭṭi is not subordinate to the Lord in terms of spiritual status — she is Herself the supreme Goddess, the divine feminine, the Śakti through whom the Lord acts. The Āzhvārs compose many verses celebrating Her beauty, grace, and compassion. Her mercy is even more accessible than the Lord's — the scriptures say She never abandons a soul that seeks Her.

Forms of Pirāṭṭi

In the Divya Desams, Pirāṭṭi is present alongside the main deity as the Tāyār (Mother): Śrī Raṅganāyakī at Śrīraṅgam, Padmāvatī at Tirumala, Śrī Komalavalli at Kāñcīpuram, and so on. Each Tāyār is an archa-avatāra of Pirāṭṭi and receives separate worship.
