The Living Transmission
Kālakṣepam (Sanskrit: kāla = time + kṣepam = spending / passing; 'spending time [in sacred study]') is the traditional format for studying sacred texts in the Śrī Vaiṣṇava tradition. An Ācārya convenes a group of disciples and expounds a grantham line by line — not merely explaining the words but bringing the full tradition of understanding to bear: doctrinal implications, anecdotes of prior Ācāryas, practical applications, and the emotional and devotional dimensions of the text.
How It Works
Kālakṣepam sādhikirār means conducting a kālakṣepam (the Ācārya's role); kālakṣepam pannukirār means attending one (the disciple's role). A kālakṣepam of a major text like the Eeḍu (the thirty-six thousand vyākhyānam on Tiruvāymozhi) may take months to complete. Major centres at Śrī Raṅgam, Kāñcīpuram, and Āzhvārtirunagari are known for ongoing kālakṣepam traditions.
Devotional Value
Participating in a kālakṣepam is considered a supreme act of devotion — śravaṇa (hearing the sacred word from the Ācārya's mouth) combined with satsaṅga (the company of fellow devotees in the sacred space of the teaching).
