The Hidden Teaching
Svāpadeśa (Sanskrit: sva = own/self + apadeśa = indication/meaning; 'the self-indicating inner meaning') is the interpretive layer of the Divya Prabandham that lies beneath the surface narrative. While the pāsurams appear to be love songs, nature poems, or devotional outpourings, they simultaneously encode precise doctrinal teachings about tattva (ontology), hita (the means), and puruṣārtha (the goal of life).
How Svāpadeśa Works
Aṇḍāḷ's Tiruppāvai appears to be Gopī-girls taking a winter vow to obtain Kṛṣṇa's grace. The svāpadeśa reveals that it encodes the entire doctrine of prapatti — the six angas of śaraṇāgati, the role of Śrī as puruṣakāra, the nature of kaiṅkarya as the goal, and the certainty of the Lord's acceptance. Each verse's literal meaning has a precise doctrinal counterpart.
Ācārya Hṛdayam
The systematic exploration of svāpadeśa is the central project of Ācārya Hṛdayam by Azhagiya Maṇavāḷa Nāyaṉār. This text demonstrates that the Āzhvārs were not merely expressing personal devotion but transmitting, through the vehicle of poetry, the complete philosophical teaching of the sampradāya.
