Also known as: goshthi, goshti, devotional assembly, sampradaya gathering, gosthi, Gōṣṭhī, கோஷ்டி, vaishnava assembly, devotee gathering

Meaning

Sacred assembly — a gathering of Śrī Vaiṣṇava devotees for communal recitation of the Divya Prabandham, study of Āchārya texts, or listening to upanyāsam; the sacred communal context in which the sampradāya lives.

Detailed Explanation

Goṣṭhi — The Sacred Devotional Assembly

Goṣṭhi (Sanskrit: goṣṭhi = gathering/assembly; from go = cow + ṣṭha = standing — originally 'the place where cows gather' → any gathering) refers to a formal or informal assembly of Śrī Vaiṣṇavas for communal devotional activity — the recitation of the Divya Prabandham, study or hearing of Āchārya texts, or attending upanyāsam (discourse).

The Three Forms of Goṣṭhi:

  1. Prabandha goṣṭhi — communal recitation of the Divya Prabandham, especially the Tiruvāimozhi; the 'sāṟṟumurai goṣṭhi' that concludes temple worship is an important example
  2. Jñāna goṣṭhi — study circle; a group gathering around the Āchārya or learned scholar to study a specific text (Mumukshuppadi, Śrī Vachana Bhūṣaṇam, etc.)
  3. Kālakṣepa goṣṭhi — gathering specifically for the sustained exposition (kālakṣepam) of a sacred text by a qualified teacher

The Importance of Goṣṭhi: The tradition insists that bhakti thrives in community — not in isolation. 'A single lamp burning in the wind may be extinguished; many lamps together sustain each other's light.' The goṣṭhi is the protected space where the sampradāya's teachings, energy, and love are collectively sustained.

Maṇipravāḷam in Goṣṭhi: Traditionally, Āchārya texts are studied in a particular linguistic blend (maṇipravāḷam — Sanskrit and Tamil interwoven) — this distinctive style itself creates a shared 'sound-space' of the sampradāya.
