அன்ய சேஷத்வம்

Also known as: anya shesatva, அன்ய சேஷத்வம், misplaced servitude, service to others, ānya sēśatvam, anya sesatvam, Anya Śeṣaṭhvam, anya-seshathvam, anya-seshatva, anyaseshathvam, misdirected service

Meaning

Servitude to anyone other than Bhagavān or His devotees — an obstacle to liberation, since the soul's true nature is to serve Bhagavān alone.

Detailed Explanation

Misplaced Servitude

Ānya-śeṣatva (Sanskrit: ānya = other + śeṣatva = servant-nature) is the error of offering one's service, devotion, or obedience to any being other than Bhagavān Śrīman Nārāyaṇa and His devotees. Since the soul's essential nature (svarūpa) is to be Bhagavān's śeṣa (servant), redirecting that servitude toward demigods, worldly persons, or one's own ego is a fundamental misalignment.

Why It Is an Obstacle

In the virōdhi (obstacle) literature, ānya-śeṣatva is listed as a svarūpa-virōdhi — an obstacle that directly contradicts the soul's true nature. The soul suffers in saṃsāra precisely because it has been directing its inherent servant-nature toward inappropriate objects, accumulating karma and remaining bound.

The Correct Orientation

The resolution of ānya-śeṣatva is not abstaining from all relationships but re-orienting them: all service flows ultimately to Bhagavān. Service to devotees (tadīya-śeṣatva) is included because it is service to those who belong to Bhagavān — and thus is service to Bhagavān through them. Only service to beings as independent ends in themselves (not as Bhagavān's servants) constitutes ānya-śeṣatva.
