Identity and Role
Viśvaksena (Sanskrit: विश्वक्षेन — 'He before whom armies scatter' or 'the all-conquering') is the senāpati (commander-in-chief) of the divine armies of Śrī Vaikuṇṭham — the Lord's foremost nityasūri and executive assistant. He is also called Senai Mudaliyār in Tamil ('the commander-in-chief').
Position in the Guru-Paramparā
Viśvaksena holds a unique place in Śrī Vaiṣṇava theology: he is the link between the purely divine paramparā (Nārāyaṇa → Śrī → Viśvaksena) and the human paramparā (beginning with Nammāzhvār). The teaching of the rahasyas flowed:
- From the Lord to Pirāṭṭi (Śrī)
- From Pirāṭṭi to Viśvaksena
- From Viśvaksena to Nammāzhvār (the first human recipient)
Worship of Viśvaksena
Viśvaksena is worshipped in every Vaiṣṇava temple — he stands guard at the entrance to the inner sanctum (garbhagṛham) and is propitiated before any major ritual or worship commences. The worship of Viśvaksena at the beginning of tiruvaradhanam is standard: his blessings are sought to remove obstacles and ensure the proper conduct of the worship.
In the Divya Prabandham
Nammāzhvār addresses Viśvaksena in Tiruvāymozhhi (2.8) — a series of hymns that celebrate the nityasūris and their eternal kainkaryam. Viśvaksena is described as the Lord's most trusted servant and the gatekeeper of Vaikuṇṭham.
