Upadēśa Raṭṭina Māḷai — The Garland of Instructional Gems
The Upadēśa Raṭṭina Māḷai ('garland of precious gems of instruction') is among the most beloved and widely recited Tamil works of Maṇavāḷa Māmuni. Its 74 verses (pāsurams) offer essential upadēśa (spiritual instruction) to the Śrī Vaiṣṇava community in an accessible, deeply devotional form.
The work opens by establishing the supreme significance of the guru-paramparā, beginning from the primordial teacher Bhagavān Himself through Śrī Mahālakṣmī, Viṣvaksena, Nammāzhvār, and the great Āchāryas (Nāthamuni, Yāmunāchārya, Rāmānujāchārya, and down to Maṇavāḷa Māmuni himself). The verses specify the star-days (thirunakshatram, avatarasthala) of each Āzhvār and Āchārya, making the text both a theological primer and a liturgical calendar of the tradition.
A significant portion of the text focuses on the Āzhvārs — their extraordinary grace, the divine gift of the 4,000 pāsurams, and the correct way to approach their works. Maṇavāḷa Māmuni emphasizes that the Āzhvārs' Tamil Prabandham is the primary guide for the tradition, equal in authority to the Sanskrit Vedas, and that correctly receiving the Prabandham requires the Āchārya's mediation and the guru-paramparā's blessings.
The Upadēśa Raṭṭina Māḷai also contains Maṇavāḷa Māmuni's passionate declaration of the Teṅkalai principles: the centrality of the Āchārya's grace, the importance of ācārya-sevā, and the supreme necessity of kṛtajñatā toward the entire paramparā. Verse 36 asks who, apart from the Āchāryas beginning with Nāthamuni, can truly know the Āzhvārs and the Divya Prabandhams; it does not praise Tirumālai Āṇḍān as Maṇavāḷa Māmuni's own Āchārya.
The work is regularly recited in Teṅkalai homes and temples, particularly on the thirunakshatra days it celebrates, and serves as a foundational text for teaching about the Āchārya-paramparā to new generations of Śrī Vaiṣṇavas.
