The Plant of Viṣṇu
Tulasī (Sanskrit; Tamil: Tirutti) is the sacred basil plant (Ocimum tenuiflorum) considered the most beloved plant of Bhagavān Viṣṇu — indeed, She is personified as a mahā-devī, a devotee and consort of the Lord. The Bhāgavata Purāṇa and Pañcarātra Āgamas unanimously declare that no worship of Viṣṇu is complete without Tulasī.
Worship Uses
Tulasī is used throughout Śrī Vaiṣṇava worship:
- Tulasī leaves are placed on naivedyam (food offerings) before presentation
- The deity's head, chest, and feet are adorned with Tulasī garlands
- Caraṇāmṛtam (water that has washed the deity's feet) includes Tulasī
- The daily recitation includes prayers to Tulasī herself (Tulasī aṣṭottara)
The Tulasī Plant at Home
Maintaining a living Tulasī plant at home is considered a sign of a devout Vaiṣṇava household. The home where Tulasī grows becomes purified by her presence. Morning circumambulation of the Tulasī plant, watering it with devotion, and offering prayers to it are part of the nityānuṣṭhānam in traditional households.
