The Varāha Kṣetra
Śrīmushnam (also Śrī Mūshnam) is a celebrated Bhū Varāha kṣetra and Śrī Vaiṣṇava abhimāna sthalam, traditionally counted among the svayam-vyakta kṣetras, located in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity is Bhū Varāha Perumāḷ — the Lord in His Varāha (boar) avatāra form, accompanied by Bhūdevī on His lap. Śrīmushnam is one of the most important kṣetras for the Varāha avatāra.
Why Śrīmushnam Is Special
The Varāha form at Śrīmushnam is particularly significant for two reasons: (1) it is one of the few temples where the Varāha form is the primary (mūlavar) deity rather than a secondary figure; (2) the Varāha Purāṇam — containing many important teachings about dharma, devotion, and the nature of liberation — is traditionally associated with this kṣetra, with the Lord instructing Bhūdevī here.
Bhūdevī's Special Presence
At Śrīmushnam, Bhūdevī is not merely a consort but the primary recipient of the Lord's teaching — the Varāha Purāṇam is addressed to her. This makes Śrīmushnam uniquely associated with Bhūdevī and with the Lord's role as teacher to His consort.
Place in Śrī Vaiṣṇava Sacred Geography
Śrīmushnam is not one of the 108 Divya Desams and does not have direct Āzhvār maṅgalāśāsanam. The presiding deity is Bhū Varāha Perumāḷ. Its great standing arises from its ancient Bhū Varāha worship, its traditional place among the svayam-vyakta kṣetras, and its enduring honour as an abhimāna sthalam.
