The Patient Consort
Bhūmi Devī (Sanskrit: bhūmi = earth + devī = goddess; 'the Earth Goddess') is the second of Bhagavān's principal consorts, alongside Śrī Devī (Lakṣmī). She personifies the Earth — the ground that bears all creatures with infinite patience, never tiring, never complaining. Her essential quality is kṣamā (forbearance and forgiveness).
Theological Role
While Śrī Devī intercedes for souls through compassion (she is moved by their suffering), Bhūmi Devī intercedes through acceptance — she has borne all creatures and all their faults on her back through all of creation's cycles. Her advocacy is the witness testimony: 'I have sustained these souls through all their lapses; please give them your grace.'
Varāha Avatāra
Bhūmi Devī is most prominently associated with the Varāha avatāra (Boar incarnation) — Bhagavān took this form specifically to rescue Bhūmi Devī from the demon Hiraṇyākṣa who had submerged her in the cosmic ocean. The Bhū Varāha temple at Śrīmushnam is a premier Divya Deśam associated with this avatāra. She is also identified with Āṇḍāḷ in some temple traditions.
