Śiṣṭāchāra

ஶிஷ்டாசாரம்

Also known as: sishta-achara, shishtachara, conduct of the learned

Meaning

Time-honoured practices of the revered elders — the established customs, rituals, and conduct handed down by learned, virtuous predecessors (*śiṣṭas*) within the Śrī Vaiṣṇava community; a secondary but important source of dharmic authority.

Detailed Explanation

Śiṣṭāchāra — Learning from What the Wise Have Always Done

Śiṣṭāchāra (Sanskrit: śiṣṭa = the learned and virtuous / the eminent elders + āchāra = conduct/practice; 'the conduct of the eminent') refers to the established practices of learned and virtuous predecessors in the tradition — practices that, even when not explicitly found in scripture, carry authority because they have been maintained by exemplary, trustworthy Śrī Vaiṣṇavas across generations.

The Hierarchy of Authority: Classical dharmaśāstra identifies three sources of authority: (1) śruti (direct Vedic revelation), (2) smṛti (secondary remembered texts), and (3) śiṣṭāchāra (conduct of the learned). Śiṣṭāchāra is the third but is treated with significant respect — 'what the wise have always done must have a basis we cannot see.'

Śiṣṭas — Who Qualifies: A śiṣṭa is a person who:

  • Is learned in śāstra (śāstra-jña)
  • Has genuine devotion (bhakti) to Bhagavān
  • Is free from arrogance, attachment, and dishonesty
  • Has demonstrated the teaching through their own lived conduct

Examples of Śiṣṭāchāra in Practice: Practices like specific timings for thiruvaradhana, the particular sequence of rites in a temple, the forms of address used for Āchāryas, the wearing of Ūrdhvapuṇḍra — many of these details are transmitted through śiṣṭāchāra when the explicit textual source is difficult to trace.

Its Limits: Śiṣṭāchāra cannot override explicit śruti or smṛti teaching. It fills gaps and provides guidance in areas where scripture is silent or ambiguous.
