Sāmya Buddhi — Equal Regard for All Bhāgavatas
Sāmya buddhi (Sanskrit: sāmya = equality/sameness, buddhi = understanding/attitude) is the proper disposition a Śrī Vaiṣṇava must cultivate toward all bhāgavatas — devotees who have surrendered to Bhagavān. It requires perceiving all such devotees as equal recipients of Bhagavān's grace, irrespective of the vast differences that may exist between them in terms of varṇa (caste), jāti (birth-community), social position, wealth, learning, or even apparent level of devotional practice.
The doctrinal basis of sāmya buddhi is rooted in the fundamental Viśiṣṭādvaita understanding of the ātman: all individual souls (jīvas) are fundamentally equal in their essential nature (svarūpa) as atomic, eternal, and purely conscious entities. The differences among jīvas — their bodies, intellects, social positions — belong entirely to the realm of prakṛti and do not define the true self. When Bhagavān's grace touches a soul through the āchārya-paramparā and pañca-saṃskāra, that soul's essential equality with all other Vaiṣṇavas is fully activated.
The Āchāryas teach that sāmya buddhi toward bhāgavatas is not a mere courtesy or social nicety but an indispensable spiritual discipline. Piḷḷai Lokācārya's Śrīvachana Bhūṣaṇam is especially emphatic: a devotee who distinguishes among bhāgavatas based on birth is making a fundamental error about the nature of the ātman and of divine grace. The tradition offers as its highest ideal not merely equal regard but a positive joy in the greatness of all bhāgavatas — recognizing in each devotee, however humble their outward station, a soul that is infinitely precious to Bhagavān.
Sāmya buddhi must be distinguished from a flattened indifference or the ignoring of real differences. The Āchāryas do not deny that some bhāgavatas may be more learned or more advanced in practice; rather, they teach that these differences must never translate into a hierarchical ranking of the essential worth of any devotee's soul in Bhagavān's sight. The Āzhvārs, especially Tirumazhisai Āzhvār and Nammāzhvār, model sāmya buddhi through their rapturous praise of Bhagavān's grace working through the humblest of devotees.
