Prāpti-Virodhi — Obstacles to Arriving at the Supreme Goal
Prāpti-virodhi ('obstacle to attainment') names the third and final major category in the tripartite structure of virodhi analysis — alongside svarūpa-virodhi (self-misknowledge) and parātva-virodhi (Bhagavān-misknowledge). While the first two concern knowing, prāpti-virodhi concerns arriving — the actual journey and arrival of the soul at its supreme goal of Śrīvaikuṇṭham and Bhagavad-kainkaryam.
Prāpti-virodhi includes:
- Attachment to intermediate goals (antara-puruṣārthas): Seeking heavenly reward (svarga), longevity, prosperity, or even the liberation of others as personal goals that distract from or dilute the complete orientation toward Śrīvaikuṇṭham
- Doubts about Bhagavān's capacity (śakti-sandeh): Questioning whether Bhagavān can truly liberate despite the weight of accumulated karma — a subtle form of inadequate viśvāsa (trust)
- Doubts about Bhagavān's intention (kāruṇya-sandeh): Questioning whether Bhagavān truly wishes to liberate this soul, despite His universal compassion
- Laxity after prapatti: The prapanna who, after performing prapatti, becomes negligent in nivṛtta-dharma (avoiding prohibited actions) and vidheyācharaṇa (performing prescribed duties) — thereby creating new obstacles
- Delay tactics: Repeatedly postponing prapatti itself on the grounds that 'conditions are not right' or 'I am not yet qualified'
Maṇavāḷa Māmunigal's commentary on the Mumukṣuppadi gives particular attention to prāpti-virodhi, emphasizing that the prapanna's viśvāsa (trust) in Bhagavān's rakṣakatva (protective power) and kāruṇya (compassion) must be firm and complete. Any erosion of this trust — whether from doubt, from distraction by intermediate goals, or from a sense that one's own karma is 'too heavy' for Bhagavān to handle — constitutes prāpti-virodhi and is addressed through deepening one's understanding of Bhagavān's nirhetuka-kṛpā.
