Title and Authorship
Prapanna-Pārijāta ('The Pārijāta Tree for the Surrendered' — the Pārijāta being the divine wish-fulfilling tree of Svarga) is a Sanskrit work by Vātsya Varadācārya, traditionally known as Naḍādūr Ammāḷ. It is the most systematic treatment of prapatti theology within the Vaḍakalai tradition, covering the nature of prapatti, its eligibility (adhikāra), its limbs, its effect, and the life of the prapanna after surrender.
Content
The text examines: who is qualified for prapatti and when; the six angas of prapatti (following the Vaḍakalai framework of Vedānta Deśika; the Teṅkalai tradition per Pillai Lokāchārya enumerates five); the status of karma, prāyaścitta, and further effort after surrender; the difference between ārta-prapatti and dṛpta-prapatti; the behavior appropriate for a prapanna; and the certainty of liberation. The author answers objections methodically, citing Vedas, Smṛtis, Purāṇas, and prior Ācāryas.
Significance
Prapanna-Pārijāta stands as the Vaḍakalai standard reference on prapatti, much as Piḷḷai Lokācārya's Śrīvacana Bhūṣaṇam serves the Teṅkalai tradition. Together they represent the two streams' most thorough doctrinal elaborations of śaraṇāgati.
