Prapanna Kulam

ப்ரபன்ன குலம்

Also known as: prapanna-kulam, community of prapannas, sri vaishnava community

Meaning

The community of the surrendered — the collective body of souls who have taken prapatti and thus belong to Bhagavān's own household; a term expressing the spiritual family bond among all Śrī Vaiṣṇavas.

Detailed Explanation

Prapanna Kulam — The Spiritual Family of the Surrendered

Prapanna kulam (Sanskrit: prapanna = one who has surrendered + kula = family/lineage; 'the family of the surrendered') refers to the collective spiritual community (saṅgha) of all souls who have taken prapatti (total surrender to Bhagavān). This community transcends caste, gender, country, and social status — united solely by the fact of surrender.

Why 'Kulam' (Family): The Āchāryas used the word kula deliberately — not just 'group' or 'collection' but family. Because once a soul has surrendered, Bhagavān Himself considers them as His own ('they are mine'), and thus all prapannas are siblings in Bhagavān's family. 'When Bhagavān says 'they are mine' — every prapanna is equally 'mine' to Him, making all prapannas family to each other.'

Bhāgavata Satsaṅga: The prapanna kulam is the environment for bhāgavata satsaṅga — the association that purifies, strengthens faith, and deepens practice. Pillai Lokāchārya teaches that seeking the company of the prapanna kulam is itself a form of devotion.

Practical Expression: Greeting fellow Śrī Vaiṣṇavas with 'Adiyen' and 'Emberumānar Thiruvadigale Śaraṇam' — using the names of the Āchārya as a shared greeting — is the lived recognition of prapanna kulam membership.
