Prahlāda

ப்ரஹ்லாதன்

Also known as: prahlāda, Prahlada, Prahlad

Meaning

The child-devotee of Viṣṇu who remained steadfast in his devotion despite brutal persecution by his demon father Hiraṇyakaśipu — the supreme example of unwavering bhakti and the Lord's protection of devotees.

Detailed Explanation

The Child-Bhakta

Prahlāda was the son of the demon king Hiraṇyakaśipu who had obtained a boon that he could not be killed by man or animal, inside or outside, by day or night, by wet or dry weapons, on earth or in the sky. Drunk with this power, he declared himself God and demanded worship.

His own son Prahlāda, however, was a born devotee of Viṣṇu — he had heard the Nārāyaṇa name in the womb (while Nārada narrated divine stories to his mother). Despite his father's every attempt to kill him — throwing him into fire, serpents, and off cliffs — Prahlāda remained unharmed, sustained by his devotion to Nārāyaṇa.

The Narasimha Avatāra

Finally, Hiraṇyakaśipu challenged Prahlāda: "Where is your Viṣṇu? Is he in this pillar?" He struck the pillar, and Viṣṇu emerged as Narasiṃha — half-lion, half-man — at twilight, on the threshold, killing the demon with his claws. The avatāra of Narasiṃha is thus directly linked to protecting Prahlāda.

Prahlāda in the Sri Vaishnava Tradition

Prahlāda is cited in the Bhāgavata Purāṇa as one of the twelve mahā-bhāgavatas (great devotees). The Āzhvārs and ācāryas invoke him as the example of:

  • Unconditional bhakti — loving God regardless of external circumstances
  • Lord's promise of protection — the Lord will protect the devotee who trusts him
  • Non-fear (abhaya) — the true devotee fears nothing because the Lord is their protector
