The Great One
Perumāḷ (Tamil: பெருமாள் — from peru (great) + māḷ (one) — 'the great one') is the standard honorific in Tamil for the deity Viṣṇu/Nārāyaṇa — particularly as manifest in the archa-avatāra (temple image/deity). While 'Bhagavān' and 'Nārāyaṇa' are pan-Indian names, 'Perumāḷ' is the distinctively Tamil Śrī Vaiṣṇava term of reverence for the Lord.
Usage in Divya Desam Context
Each Divya Desam temple has its own Perumāḷ — the presiding archa-avatāra form who has chosen to manifest and dwell at that sacred site:
- Śrīraṅgam: Namperumāḷ (the processional deity), Araṅganātha Perumāḷ
- Tirumala: Śrī Veṅkaṭēśvara Perumāḷ
- Kāñcīpuram: Varadarāja Perumāḷ
- Āzhvārtirunagari: Ādi Nātha Perumāḷ
Devotees refer to 'their' temple's deity as 'Perumāḷ' with profound intimacy — as one would refer to a beloved family member.
'Nam' Perumāḷ
'Namperumāḷ' (Nam + Perumāḷ = 'our Perumāḷ') is specifically the processional deity (utsava mūrti) at Śrīraṅgam — the one who 'comes out' to devotees during festivals. The prefix 'nam' (our) expresses the Śrī Vaiṣṇava sense of intimate ownership and belonging that characterizes the devotee's relationship with the archa-avatāra.
In the Prabandham
The Āzhvārs' hymns are addressed to specific Perumāḷs at specific temples — each archa-avatāra has its own set of hymns and is celebrated for its distinctive vigraha (form), posture, and characteristics. This specificity is characteristic of Śrī Vaiṣṇava devotion.
