Periyavācān Piḷḷai — The Great Commentator of the Divya Prabandham
Periyavācān Piḷḷai was a great 13th-century Śrī Vaiṣṇava Āchārya and a direct disciple of Nampiḷḷai. Nampiḷḷai should not be identified parenthetically as Tiruvaraṅgattu Amudanār; they are different Āchāryas. Periyavācān Piḷḷai is celebrated as Vyākhyāna Cakravarti for composing commentaries on virtually the whole Nālāyira Divya Prabandham.
Among his major works is the 24,000-paḍi commentary on Tiruvāymozhi, composed in accordance with Nampiḷḷai’s instruction. He also wrote commentaries on the other Āzhvār prabandhams and works such as Pāsurappaḍi Rāmāyaṇam. The earlier wording that assigned to him “Tiruppāṇāzhvār’s Tiruvaraṅgattu Amudanār Rahasya Granthas” conflated an Āzhvār, an Āchārya, and unrelated textual categories.
His vyākhyānams are distinguished by their mastery of Sanskrit śāstra and Tamil literary tradition, their use of Pūrvācārya explanations and pramāṇas, and their sensitivity to the Āzhvārs’ devotional experience. They remain indispensable in Divya Prabandham kālakṣepam.
Maṇavāḷa Māmunigaḷ deeply honoured Periyavācān Piḷḷai and the commentarial inheritance he preserved. Māmunigaḷ did not write a 6,000-paḍi Tiruvāymozhi commentary: that foundational commentary was composed by Tirukkurugaippirān Piḷḷān. The principal traditional Tiruvāymozhi commentaries are Piḷḷān’s 6,000-paḍi, Nañjīyar’s 9,000-paḍi, Periyavācān Piḷḷai’s 24,000-paḍi, Nampiḷḷai’s Īḍu teachings recorded by Vaṭakkutiruvīdhip Piḷḷai as 36,000-paḍi, and Vādikēsari Aḻagiya Maṇavāḷa Jīyar’s 12,000-paḍi.

His commentaries are known for their accessibility, their rich use of traditional anecdotes, and their precise doctrinal explanations.

Connection to Vedānta Deśika
Interestingly, Periyavāccān Piḷḷai's tradition fed both the Teṅkalai and Vaḍakalai streams. Vedānta Deśika himself honored and studied from this commentarial lineage, demonstrating that the two streams shared a common foundation before their divergence on specific theological points.
