Pāraṇam — The Sacred Completion of the Ekādaśī Fast
Pāraṇam (from the Sanskrit root pṝ, 'to fill/complete/fulfil') is the prescribed act of concluding the Ekādaśī fast (the eleventh lunar day fast, observed on both Śukla Ekādaśī and Kṛṣṇa Ekādaśī) on the following Dvādaśī (twelfth lunar day) at the correct time and in the correct manner. The rules governing Pāraṇam are precise and considered as important as the fast itself: Pāraṇam must be performed after sunrise on Dvādaśī, but before the Dvādaśī tithi (lunar day) ends. If the Dvādaśī tithi expires before one has eaten (due to overlap with Trayodaśī), the fast is extended and Pāraṇam must still be performed at the correct time. Similarly, if the Ekādaśī tithi has not ended at sunrise (i.e., it spills into the Dvādaśī morning), one must wait for it to end before breaking the fast.
In Śrī Vaiṣṇava practice, Pāraṇam carries deep spiritual significance beyond the timing rules. The first act of Pāraṇam is always the receipt of tulasī-tīrtham (sanctified water into which tulasī has been placed, representing Bhagavān's caraṇāmṛtam — the water of His feet). Only after receiving this tīrtham — thereby formally receiving Bhagavān's grace — does the devotee proceed to eat. The theological message is clear: the fast is not broken by food; it is broken by Bhagavān's grace. The fast itself was an act of kaiṅkarya (loving service to Bhagavān, honoring His day) — and it is Bhagavān who releases the devotee from that kaiṅkarya at the appropriate time, through His prasāda.
Ekādaśī and its Pāraṇam together form one of the most universally observed practices among Śrī Vaiṣṇavas. The Ekādaśī fast is understood not merely as a physical discipline but as a heightened day of nityānusandhānam — with additional recitation of Bhagavān's names and the Āzhvārs' pāsurams replacing the usual meals. The Pāraṇam the following morning is therefore a joyful celebration of having spent Ekādaśī in intensified devotion. In many Śrī Vaiṣṇava temples, the Pāraṇam tīrtham is distributed by the priest to all devotees present, making the individual Pāraṇam a communal satsaṅga act.
