The Stairway to Liberation
Paramapada Sōpānam (Tamil-Sanskrit: paramapada = the supreme abode/Vaikuṇṭha + sōpānam = stairway/steps; 'The Stairway to Paramapada') is a beloved text by Vedānta Deśika that lays out the Śrī Vaiṣṇava path in clear, step-by-step terms — like a staircase ascending from the condition of bondage all the way to the liberation of Vaikuṇṭha.
Structure
The text is organized as a progressive ascent through stages:
- The soul's condition in saṃsāra and recognition of its true nature
- The turn toward liberation and the role of the Ācārya
- The śaraṇāgati (prapatti) moment
- The post-prapatti life and conduct
- The final transition at death and the journey to Vaikuṇṭha
- The experience of liberation in Bhagavān's presence
Accessibility
Like several of Vedānta Deśika's rahasya works, Paramapada Sōpānam is accessible to non-specialists while being precise for scholars. Its stairway metaphor makes abstract theology concrete: 'You are here; liberation is there; these are the steps between.' This clarity has made it one of the most studied texts for new learners of the tradition.
