Mumukṣutva

முமுக்ஷுத்வம்

Also known as: mumukṣutva, mumuksutva, desire for liberation, longing for moksha, mumuksha

Meaning

The intense desire for liberation — the burning longing to be freed from the cycle of birth and death (saṃsāra) and to attain the Lord's presence, which is the foundational qualification for undertaking any path of liberation.

Detailed Explanation

The Desire for Liberation

Mumukṣutva ('the state of being a mumukṣu') is the burning desire for mokṣa — liberation from saṃsāra. It is a foundational qualification (adhikāra) for any path of liberation and the fuel that sustains the spiritual journey. Without mumukṣutva, even the finest teaching will not take root; with it, even modest teaching can bear fruit.

Intensity Matters

Mumukṣutva is not merely a mild preference for spiritual life alongside worldly goals. The Vedāntic tradition, and Sri Vaishnava ācāryas especially, describe genuine mumukṣutva as a consuming urgency — as intense as the desire of a drowning person for air. The Muṇḍakopaniṣad and other texts prescribe that only one with genuine, burning mumukṣutva is qualified (adhikārī) to receive the highest teaching.

Three Degrees

Manda-mumukṣutva (mild desire), madhyama-mumukṣutva (moderate), and tīvra-mumukṣutva (intense). In Sri Vaishnava understanding, prapatti is accessible even to those with mild mumukṣutva — unlike bhakti-yoga which requires more sustained intensity. The ācārya recognizes the degree and prescribes accordingly.

Awakening Mumukṣutva

The Āzhvārs' pasurams and the ācārya's kalakṣepam (discourses) are designed to awaken and intensify mumukṣutva. When the listener hears the description of Vaikuṇṭha, the Lord's beauty, and the contrast with saṃsāric suffering, natural mumukṣutva is kindled. This is why the upanyāsa tradition and kalakṣepam are so central to Sri Vaishnava community life.
