The Earnest Seeker
A mumukṣu (from mumukṣā, the desire for liberation) is one who has recognized the suffering inherent in saṃsāra and genuinely yearns to be free. In Viśiṣṭādvaita, this is not mere intellectual curiosity but an intense desire — mumukṣutva — that motivates the soul to seek a sadācārya and take up the path of prapatti or bhakti-yoga.
Grades of Aspiration
Not all mumukṣus are equal in urgency. The ārthi seeks relief from present suffering; the mumukṣu proper seeks ultimate freedom; the most advanced is ready to surrender completely and becomes a prapanna. Bhagavān meets each soul at its level of aspiration.
Adhikāra
Mumukṣutva is the primary adhikāra (qualification) for the spiritual path. A person who genuinely desires liberation is considered qualified (adhikārī) regardless of birth, gender, or caste — a notably inclusive stance in the Śrī Vaiṣṇava sampradāya.
