Kalyāṇa Guṇas — Bhagavān's Infinite Auspicious Qualities
Kalyāṇa Guṇas (Sanskrit: kalyāṇa = auspicious/blessed + guṇa = quality; 'auspicious qualities') refers to the infinite divine attributes of Śrīman Nārāyaṇan that distinguish Him from all other entities and make Him uniquely worthy of supreme devotion.
Infinite in Number: The Vedas and Pañcarātra declare that Bhagavān's guṇas are ananta (infinite) — 'nāsya pramā kvacit asti' — 'there is no limit to His qualities anywhere.' Each quality is itself infinite in degree.
Key Kalyāṇa Guṇas:
- Jñāna — omniscience; knowledge of everything at all times
- Bala — omnipotence; infinite strength
- Aiśvarya — absolute sovereignty over all creation
- Śakti — creative divine power
- Vīrya — unchanging invincibility
- Tejas — incomparable divine radiance
- Sauśīlyam — gracious condescension toward the low
- Saulabhyam — easy accessibility; approaching the devotee
- Vātsalyam — motherly indulgence; overlooking devotees' faults
- Kṛpā — unlimited compassion
- Saundarya — incomparable divine beauty
Why They Matter: A devotee meditates on Bhagavān's kalyāṇa guṇas as the very object of devotion — 'His qualities draw me to Him.' The Āḷvārs' Divya Prabandham is essentially an extended celebration of these kalyāṇa guṇas.
