parathvam

பரத்வம்

Also known as: para, supreme nature, transcendence of brahman, paratva

Meaning

The supreme and transcendent nature of Bhagavān; his absolute supremacy over all of existence as the highest reality.

Detailed Explanation

Parathvam — Supreme Transcendence

Parathvam (Sanskrit: para — supreme, highest; tva — -ness) denotes Bhagavān's absolute supremacy over all beings, realms, and categories of existence. As the Paramātman who is the inner controller of all, Bhagavān stands as the singular unrivalled reality.

In Śrī Vaiṣṇava theology, parathvam is not mere philosophical abstraction but a direct corollary of the Upaniṣadic declarations about Nārāyaṇa. The Nārāyaṇa Sūkta, Puruṣa Sūkta, and Mahā Nārāyaṇa Upaniṣad all articulate parathvam in different registers.

Parathvam stands in creative tension with saulabhyam (accessibility) and sauśīlyam (condescension/affability). Bhagavān is simultaneously the absolutely supreme (para) and yet intimately approachable in the archāvatāra form — a paradox that Āzhvārs celebrate throughout the Divya Prabandham. In Yathīndra Pravaṇa Prabhāvam, the śiṣyas who understood their guru Māmunigaḷ's true nature grasped both his parathvam (as the veritable avatar of Ādiśeṣa) and his sauśīlyam.
