Infinite and Perfect Qualities
Kalyāṇa-guṇas ('auspicious qualities') are the infinite divine attributes of Bhagavān Śrīman Nārāyaṇa. The tradition holds that His qualities are ananta (infinite), anapāyitva (unfailing), and entirely positive — no defect (heyatva) can touch them.
The Six Primary Guṇas
The tradition often highlights six primary attributes: jñāna (omniscience), bala (unlimited strength), aiśvarya (sovereignty), śakti (power), vīrya (valor), and tejas (splendor). Additionally, the qualities of saulabhya (accessibility), vātsalya (parental love), sauśīlya (gracious condescension), and kāruṇya (compassion) are especially emphasized in prapatti theology — these are the qualities that make surrender possible and safe.
Contemplation as Practice
Meditation on the kalyāṇa-guṇas is itself a devotional act (guṇānubhava). The Āzhvārs' hymns are an outpouring of wonder and love evoked by direct experience of these qualities. Commentary literature draws out the implication of each guṇa for the aspirant's relationship with Bhagavān.
