Bhū Varāha

பூ வராஹம்

Also known as: bhū varāha, Bhu Varaha, Varaha avatar, cosmic boar, Sri Varaha

Meaning

The divine boar who rescued the Earth — Viṣṇu's Varāha avatāra who lifted Bhūdevī from the cosmic waters by slaying the demon Hiraṇyākṣa, symbolizing the Lord's power to rescue those who have fallen into distress.

Detailed Explanation

The Boar Incarnation

Bhū Varāha ('Earth-Boar') refers to the Varāha avatāra of Viṣṇu — the incarnation as a cosmic boar who descended into the primordial waters to rescue Bhūdevī (Earth goddess) from the demon Hiraṇyākṣa. Viṣṇu took the form of a mighty boar, plunged into the cosmic ocean, slew Hiraṇyākṣa, and lifted the Earth on his tusks, restoring cosmic order.

Theological Symbol

The Varāha episode is interpreted allegorically: Bhūdevī trapped beneath the waters represents the jīva overwhelmed by karma and māyā — the cosmic ocean of saṃsāra. The Lord, moved by His natural impulse to protect the helpless, takes an avatāra — descends into the waters of saṃsāra — to lift the fallen jīva. This illustrates saulabhya (accessibility), vātsalya (protective love), and rakṣakatva (protectorship).

Bhū Varāha at Tirupati

At Tirumala-Tirupati, Bhū Varāha Swami is venerated at a separate temple at the foot of the hills. According to tradition, Viṣṇu first sought permission from Bhū Varāha before taking up His position at Tirumala as Veṅkaṭeśvara. Pilgrims traditionally visit Bhū Varāha Swami first before ascending the hills — an act of reverence to the presiding deity of the base.

Varāha Purāṇam

The Varāha Purāṇam contains important teachings about dharma and devotion delivered by the Lord in His boar form. The Bhūdevī-Varāha dialogue within it addresses topics of liberation and the nature of divine grace.
