Bhagavān Śrīman Nārāyaṇa — The Full Honorific of the Supreme Person
Bhagavān Śrīman Nārāyaṇa is the foundational theological name used in Śrī Vaiṣṇava tradition to designate the Supreme Being in His full, unabbreviated glory. Each component carries precise doctrinal weight. Bhagavān (from bhaga = all auspicious qualities + vān = possessor) signifies the One who possesses all six divine excellences in full: jñāna (omniscience), bala (omnipotence), aiśvarya (lordship), śakti (infinite power), vīrya (energy), and tējas (splendour). This is the Being who is eternally perfect and complete — āptakāma, desiring nothing for Himself.
Śrīman — Attended by Śrī: The prefix Śrīman is crucial to Śrī Vaiṣṇava identity. It marks Nārāyaṇa as the inseparable consort of Śrī Mahālakṣmī — not a transient association but an eternal, non-contingent union. Pillai Lokāchārya in Śrī Vachana Bhūṣaṇam explains that the Śrī prefix makes all the difference: it is because Bhagavān is Śrīman that approach to Him is possible at all, for Śrī serves as the purushakāra (divine mediator) who removes the jīva's fear of approaching the Lord. Without Śrī, the Lord's absolute majesty would be unapproachable.
Nārāyaṇa — The Indwelling Ground of All: Nārāyaṇa (from nāra = all conscious beings and material creation + ayana = abode/refuge) literally means 'the one in whom all nāras rest and from whom all nāras originate.' This etymology, expounded in the Mahābhārata, Viṣṇu Purāṇa, and the Nārāyaṇa Sūkta, captures Viśiṣṭādvaita's central insight: all souls and matter are the body (śarīra) of Nārāyaṇa, who is their inner controller (antaryāmin), sustainer, and ultimate goal.
The Name in Practice: In Śrī Vaiṣṇava liturgy, Śrīman Nārāyaṇa is the utterance that opens all formal prayer. Rāmānuja in his Gadya-traya invokes this full name with meditations that expand each syllable into a doctrinal universe. The Aṣṭākṣara mantra (Oṃ Namo Nārāyaṇāya) is built on this very name. In Tiruvāymozhi (1.1.1), Nammāzhvār addresses Bhagavān as māyoṉ — a Tamil articulation of the same transcendence.
