Kṛṣṇa's Elder Brother
Balarāma (also called Halāyudha, Saṃkarṣaṇa, Rāma, Dāu) is Kṛṣṇa's elder brother — born of Devakī's seventh pregnancy but miraculously transferred to Rohiṇī's womb to save him from Kaṃsa. He grew up alongside Kṛṣṇa in Gokula and Vṛndāvana.
Balarāma is the second of the four Vyūha forms (the cosmic manifestation called Saṃkarṣaṇa) and is identified in the Sri Vaishnava tradition as an avatāra of Ādiśeṣa — just as Lakṣmaṇa was Ādiśeṣa in the Rāma avatāra.
Character and Qualities
- Prodigious strength — Balarāma killed the demon Dhenuka, the bull-demon Ariṣṭa, and others through raw power
- The plough and club — his weapons: hala (plough — for drawing back enemies) and musala (mace)
- Fair-complexioned — a contrast to Kṛṣṇa's dark complexion; together they embody the complementary opposites
- Teacher — Duryodhana and Bhīma both studied mace-fighting under Balarāma; he taught without sectarian bias
The Saṃkarṣaṇa Theology
In the Pañcarātra Vyūha theology, the four cosmic forms are Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), Saṃkarṣaṇa (Balarāma), Pradyumna (Kāma/Aniruddha's father), and Aniruddha. Saṃkarṣaṇa is associated with the jīva and the quality of bala (strength).
