Ananyatva

அனன்யத்வம்

Also known as: ananyata, ananya-bhakti

Meaning

Non-otherness; the state of complete, exclusive dedication to Bhagavān alone (*ananyatva*, 'the quality of having no other'); the condition in which the devotee has no other refuge, no other object of love, and no other source of support — only Śrīman Nārāyaṇa occupies the heart as the sole goal.

Detailed Explanation

Ananyatva — Having No Other

Ananyatva ('the quality of having no other', an = negation + anya = other + tva = quality/state) names the spiritual state of complete, exclusive orientation toward Bhagavān alone — a state in which no other deity, no other relationship, and no other goal divides the soul's complete attention and love from Śrīman Nārāyaṇa.

Ananyatva is closely related to — but distinct from — ananyārha-śeṣatva (being fit as śeṣa to Bhagavān alone) and ananyaśaraṇatva (having no other refuge). While ananyārha-śeṣatva is an ontological statement about the soul's fundamental nature (the soul belongs to Bhagavān alone), ananyatva describes the realized, lived experience of that nature — the condition in which the soul's devotion, refuge, and orientation are in fact exclusively directed toward Bhagavān.

Bhagavad Gītā 9.22 begins ananyāś cintayanto māṃ ye janāḥ paryupāsate ('those who worship Me, thinking of no other...') and is an important scriptural locus for exclusive orientation toward Bhagavān. It is not the Gītā's Carama Śloka; that designation belongs in Śrī Vaiṣṇava usage to Bhagavad Gītā 18.66, sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṃ śaraṇaṃ vraja.

In the context of prapatti (surrender), ananyatva describes the exclusiveness of the soul's refuge, upāya, and goal. It is closely expressed through ananya-śaraṇatva and mahā-viśvāsa, but āśrayaṇatva is not a standard separately enumerated member of the familiar prapatti-aṅga list. The prapanna keeps no independent alternative upāya alongside Bhagavān.
