Adhyayana Utsavam — The Great Festival of Prabandham Recitation
Adhyayana utsavam ('the celebration of sacred study/recitation'; adhyayana = study, recitation + utsavam = festival, celebration) is the most important annual liturgical festival in Śrī Vaiṣṇava temples — a twenty-day event during which the complete Divya Prabandham (all 4,000 Tamil pāsurams of the twelve Āzhvārs) is systematically recited before Bhagavān.
The festival unfolds in two halves:
Irappathu ('Ten Nights') — The first ten days, beginning on Śukla Ekādaśī (eleventh day of the waxing moon) in Mārgaḷi month. During irappathu, the recitation proceeds from the Periyāzhvār Tirumozhi through the pāsurams of the various Āzhvārs in succession. The nights are the primary time of recitation — large gatherings assemble to hear the Araiyars (hereditary temple reciters in certain temples) sing and enact the pāsurams.
Pagalpathu ('Ten Days') — The final ten days, beginning from Kṛṣṇa Prathamā (first day of the waning moon) in Mārgaḷi. During pagalpathu, the recitation concludes with Nammāzhvār's Tiruvāimoḷi — the 1,102 pāsurams that are the crown of the entire Prabandham. The festival culminates on Vaikuṇṭha Ekādaśī — the single most important day in the Śrī Vaiṣṇava calendar — when the Paramapada Vāsal (gateway to the highest realm) of the temple is opened and Bhagavān is given darśan as the Lord of Śrīvaikuṇṭham. Devotees stream through the northern gateway (uttara dvāra) as a symbolic crossing into Vaikuṇṭham.
The theological significance of adhyayana utsavam rests on the understanding that the Divya Prabandham is Bhagavān's own speech — the pāsurams are His icchā (will) expressed through the Āzhvārs' mouths. Reciting them before Him completes a divine loop: His own words, given in His grace, returned to Him in praise. Piḷḷai Lokāchārya's Śrīvachana Bhūṣaṇam extensively treats the sanctity of Prabandham recitation.
