Yatirāja Viṃśati

யதிராஜ விம்சதி

Also known as: yatirāja viṃśati, Yatiraja Vimsati, Twenty Verses on Ramanuja, Mamunigal's Ramanuja hymn

Meaning

Twenty Verses on the King of Ascetics — Maṇavāḷa Māmunigal's twenty Sanskrit verses in praise of Rāmānuja (Yatirāja), considered one of the most beautiful and theologically rich hymns in the tradition.

Detailed Explanation

Twenty Verses for Rāmānuja

Yatirāja Viṃśati ('Twenty [verses] for the King of Yatīs/Ascetics') is a Sanskrit stotra (hymn) by Maṇavāḷa Māmunigal (15th century CE) consisting of twenty verses in praise of Rāmānuja (Yatirāja — 'king among ascetics'). It is among the most exquisite devotional compositions in the tradition, combining doctrinal depth with intense personal devotion.

Theological Content

The twenty verses celebrate: Rāmānuja's role as the savior of fallen souls; his defeat of rival philosophical schools; his composition of Śrī Bhāṣyam; his grace in making prapatti accessible to all; his qualities of compassion, wisdom, and humility; and the devotee's own sense of total dependence on Rāmānuja's grace for liberation. The final verses express that the devotee seeks liberation not for personal joy but to serve Rāmānuja eternally in Vaikuṇṭha.

Maṇavāḷa Māmunigal's Devotion

Māmunigal's relationship to Rāmānuja was one of the deepest forms of ācārya-niṣṭhā — he saw Rāmānuja as identical to the Lord's grace. The tradition holds that Namperumāḷ ordered Māmunigaḷ to expound Nammāzhvār's Tiruvāymoḻi with the Īḍu 36,000-padi commentary. At the conclusion of that extended kalakṣepam, the Lord appeared in the form of a child, accepted Māmunigaḷ as His Āchārya, and offered the taniyan beginning Śrīśailēśa-dayāpātram.

Daily Recitation

Yatirāja Viṃśati is recited at Rāmānuja's tirunakṣatram (birthday) and at the ācārya-worship (ācārya-aradhana) in Sri Vaishnava homes and temples. It has a commentary by Śrī U. Ve. P. B. Annangaracharya Swami and is widely published.
