Detailed Explanation

Viśeṣaṇa — The Qualifying Attribute in Viśiṣṭādvaita

Viśeṣaṇa (from Sanskrit viśeṣ = to distinguish, particularize) is a technical term in Indian philosophy meaning "that which qualifies" or "qualifier." In Viśiṣṭādvaita Vedānta, as systematized by Śrī Rāmānuja, the concept of viśeṣaṇa occupies a central role in understanding the nature of Brahman's non-dual yet internally differentiated reality.

Rāmānuja's revolutionary philosophical contribution is the viśeṣaṇa-viśeṣya-bhāva (qualifier-qualified relationship), which provides the conceptual framework for understanding how Brahman (Śrīman Nārāyaṇa) can be simultaneously One and Many. The jīva (individual conscious soul) and jagat (the material world of acit) are viśeṣaṇas — qualifying attributes — of Brahman the viśeṣya (the qualified substance). Just as a body qualifies its possessing soul (giving it specific characteristics and identity), so the jīva and jagat qualify Brahman without existing independently of Brahman.

This relationship is not merely metaphorical but ontological: the viśeṣaṇa cannot exist apart from the viśeṣya it qualifies, and the viśeṣya is always found with its viśeṣaṇas. For the theologian, this means that all statements about the world and souls are ultimately statements about Brahman qualified by them — preserving non-duality (advaita) while affirming real difference (viśeṣa). The viśeṣaṇa framework also explains the Upaniṣadic statements like "Tat tvam asi" ("That thou art") as affirming the identity of the qualified Brahman with the individual self.
