Sacred Distribution
Viniyōgam (Sanskrit: viniyoga = application, distribution, specific use; Tamil: viniyōgam) in Śrī Vaiṣṇava usage refers to the formal sharing and distribution of blessed offerings (prasādam) among the gathering of devotees. After naivedyam has been offered to the deity and the deity has 'received' it, the prasādam is distributed (viniyogam) among all present.
The Social Act of Prasādam
Viniyogam transforms prasādam from a private devotional matter into a community-binding act. When all devotees share in the same prasādam — the same rice, the same fruit, the same theertham — they are joined in a communion that transcends social distinctions. The tradition teaches that eating prasādam together creates a spiritual bond (sambandham) among all who receive it.
Mantra and Distribution
In formal temple and ritual settings, the distribution of prasādam is accompanied by specific mantras. The viniyoga-mantra — 'This is for Bhagavān; this is received from Bhagavān' — frames the act of distribution as a conscious theological statement, not merely a social sharing of food.
