Vidhi-rahasyam — The Secret of the Procedure
Vidhi-rahasyam ('the secret of the vidhi/procedure') is a Maṇipravāḷa text in the Vaḍakalai Śrī Vaiṣṇava tradition that addresses the procedural and behavioral aspects of prapatti and post-prapatti life. The 'vidhi' in the title refers to the correct method (ārādhana-vidhi, prapatti-vidhi) — a complement to the mantra-rahasyam (which focuses on what the mantras mean) and anusandhāna-rahasyam (which focuses on the inner practice).
The Vidhi-rahasyam addresses questions such as: How should prapatti be formally performed? What are the essential components of the surrender act (the five aṅgas)? What is the correct relationship between the Āchārya's mediation and Bhagavān's direct acceptance? What are the ongoing vidhis (obligations) of a prapanna — the Tiruvārādhanam procedure, the observance of Ekādaśī and Dvādaśī, the correct practice of Śrī Vaiṣṇava ācāra?
In the broader context of the Śrī Vaiṣṇava rahasyam literature, the distinction between vidhi, anusandhāna, and mantra rahasyam captures three dimensions of the prapanna's life: what the mantras mean (mantra), how to internally realize their meaning daily (anusandhāna), and what procedures govern the formal practice of surrender and ongoing Vaiṣṇava life (vidhi).
The text reflects the Vaḍakalai tradition's characteristic emphasis on correct procedure (vidhi) — the precise execution of prapatti and Vaiṣṇava ācāra — as itself a form of reverence. Getting the procedure right is not mere formalism but an expression of sincerity: the soul that genuinely wants to surrender will want to surrender in the right way, with full understanding of what it is doing.
Vedānta Deśika's comprehensive Rahasyatrayasāra subsumes much of what the Vidhi-rahasyam teaches within a broader framework, making the Vidhi-rahasyam valuable particularly as a focused, procedurally oriented companion text.
