Vibhu

விபு

Also known as: vibhu, all-pervading, omnipresent, sarvavyapin

Meaning

All-pervading, omnipresent — the Lord's presence extends through all existence without limit, contrasting with the individual soul (jīva) which is atomic (aṇu) in essential size.

Detailed Explanation

All-Pervading Consciousness

Vibhu means 'all-pervading,' 'great,' or 'infinite.' In Vishishtadvaita, Brahman/Paramātman is vibhu — its consciousness and being extend through all of space and time without restriction. This contrasts with the jīva (individual soul), which, though eternal, is aṇu (atomic) in its essential self, even though its attribute-consciousness can expand.

Vibhu vs Aṇu

The Viṣṇu Purāṇa distinguishes between the vibhu (all-pervading) Brahman and the aṇu (atomic) jīva. Brahman's vibhutva is intrinsic — it does not expand or contract, being limitless by nature. The jīva's essential self is point-like, though its dharma-bhūta-jñāna (attribute-consciousness) can expand or contract based on its condition.

Two Vibhūtis

Related is the concept of Brahman's two vibhūtis (realms): the nityavibhūti (the eternal realm of Vaikuṇṭha, consisting of śuddhasattva) and the līlāvibhūti (the universe of play, where Brahman manifests as both material and spiritual aspects). Both realms are pervaded by Brahman's omnipresent being.

Devotional Implications

In devotional texts, Viṣṇu is praised as vibhu — the great, the all-pervading. In Viṣṇu Sahasranāmam, many names reflect this quality. For Sri Vaishnavas, the realization that the Lord is vibhu — present everywhere — grounds the practice of seeing Brahman in all beings and in every moment of experience.
