Vīṭṭirunta Tirukkolam

வீற்றிருந்த திருக்கோலம்

Also known as: vīṭṭirunta tirukkolam, veetrirunta tirukkolam, வீற்றிருந்த திருக்கோலம், seated deity posture, asana tirukkolam, Veetrirundha ṭhirukkolam

Meaning

The seated divine posture — the form in which the deity is enthroned in seated sovereign majesty, as in the celebrated Yoga Narasimha form at Śoḷiṅgapuram.

Detailed Explanation

The Royal Seat

Vīṭṭirunta Tirukkolam (Tamil: vīṭṭu = abode/elevated position + irunta = being seated + tirukkolam = sacred form; 'the sacred form of sitting in exalted state') is the posture in which Bhagavān is enshrined seated in royal composure — Āsīna (seated) in Sanskrit Āgamic terminology.

The Seated Deities

Yoga Narasimha at Śoḷiṅgapuram is a celebrated seated form in the Divya Deśam tradition. The mūlavar Varadarāja Perumāḷ at Kāñcīpuram is in a standing posture and should not be cited as an example of vīṭṭirunta tirukkolam.

Theological Meaning

The seated posture represents Bhagavān's stable, sovereign presence — the king who is always 'in court,' always available to hear the petitions of devotees. Unlike the reclining posture (ultimate ease) or standing posture (readiness to act), the seated form combines both: established sovereignty with attentive grace.
