Vāmana

வாமனன்

Also known as: vāmana, Vamana, Trivikrama, Upendra

Meaning

The dwarf avatāra of Viṣṇu — who approached King Bali as a tiny Brahmin boy, begged for three steps of land, then expanded to cosmic dimensions (Trivikrama) to reclaim all three worlds in a demonstration of divine sovereignty.

Detailed Explanation

The Story of Vāmana and Bali

King Mahābali (Bali), an asura king of extraordinary generosity and virtue, had conquered all three worlds through his tapas (austerities) and the grace of Śukra (his guru). To restore the gods' realm, Viṣṇu descended as Vāmana — a tiny Brahmin boy of divine grace — and approached Bali during his grand sacrificial ceremony.

Vāmana begged for only three steps of land. Bali, moved by the child's charm and his own generosity, agreed — despite Śukra's warning that this was Viṣṇu himself. In an instant, Vāmana expanded to his cosmic form (Trivikrama — the three-strider) and strode across all three worlds with two steps. For the third step, Bali offered his own head — and was sent to Pātāla (the netherworld) as a ruler, a just fate honoring both his defeat and his extraordinary virtue.

Theological Layers

The Vāmana-Trivikrama episode carries multiple meanings:

  1. Divine sovereignty — the Lord's claim over all three worlds is established
  2. The foolishness of attachment — Bali's claim over "his" three worlds was illusory from the start; all belongs to Nārāyaṇa
  3. Grace to the generous — Bali's generosity is honored; he becomes the ruler of Pātāla and will become the Indra of the next cosmic cycle
  4. The Lord's playfulness — taking a child's form to reclaim cosmic sovereignty is the divine līlā par excellence

In the Divya Prabandham

Trivikrama's cosmic stride — measured by Nammāzhvār as the supreme demonstration of paratva (supremacy) and saulabhya (accessibility) at once — is celebrated throughout the Divya Prabandham.
