Vāchya Vāchaka

வாச்ய வாசக

Also known as: vachya-vachaka, word-meaning relation, signifier-signified

Meaning

The word and its referent — the relationship between a word (*vāchaka*) and what it signifies (*vāchya*); used in Śrī Vaiṣṇava theology to explain how sacred names, mantras, and Āzhvār hymns relate to and actually invoke the divine reality they name.

Detailed Explanation

Vāchya Vāchaka — When the Word and the Reality Are One

Vāchya vāchaka (Sanskrit: vāchya = that which is to be spoken/signified + vāchaka = that which speaks/signifies; 'the signified and the signifier') is the philosophical concept addressing the relationship between a word or name and the reality it designates.

In General Philosophy: In classical Sanskrit linguistic philosophy, the relationship between vāchaka (word/signifier) and vāchya (meaning/signified) is treated as a fundamental question: what is the nature of this relationship? Is it natural (svābhāvika) or conventional (aupādhika)?

In Śrī Vaiṣṇava Theology: The tradition holds that the relationship between divine names (like Nārāyaṇa, Rāma, Kṛṣṇa) and Bhagavān is not merely conventional — it is an essential, intrinsic connection. 'When you say Nārāyaṇa, you are not merely pointing at Bhagavān from a distance — you are, in some real sense, bringing His presence to the fore. The name and the named are intimately related.'

Application to Mantras: This is why mantras like the Aṣṭākṣara (Om Namo Nārāyaṇāya) are not mere word-arrangements but sacred realities — their vāchya (Bhagavān) is genuinely accessible through proper recitation of the vāchaka (the syllables). 'The mantra, properly received from the Āchārya and properly uttered, opens a real doorway — not a metaphorical one.'

Application to the Divya Prabandham: The Āzhvārs' hymns as vāchaka literally bring their vāchya (the divine forms of Bhagavān at each divya deśa) into presence. This is why recitation is considered proximity to Bhagavān Himself.
